Plein-Air

Plein-Air, from the French meaning “painting in the open air.” Since I love to be outside, making art in this tradition greatly energizes me. Although it’s not without challenges: inconsistent light and shade, troublesome wind and weather, and once I’ve finally found the perfect location, that dreaded distance to a bathroom!

Advantages? Every time I see my subject live, I respond with my most original perspective. When working from a reference photo, the camera has already picked up highlights and focused on specific elements. With a view of nature directly in front of me, there are a million options, and I enjoy choosing a focus. Every single leaf and blade of grass seems so important. I marvel that God made each one, even the ones no one ever notices.

UPDATE: I was completely surprised and honored to win “Best of Show” in the Memphis Botanical Garden Plein-Air competition.
